the 20th century was all kinds of fucked up
Every regime active at the time count their deaths in millions, the sheer waste of human life in yet more. It takes an astronomical amount of special pleading to shed responsibility in the partaking of these horrors but point at the regimes that did the same exact thing and count THOSE failures as characteristic of their respective state philosophies. Special. Fucking. Pleading.
I mean sure.. if you insist that communism applied correctly can lead to an increase in wellbeing and fairness, why can't the same be said about capitalism? With capitalism it's always insisting that the strong *have* to exploit the weak (where does it say that anywhere? the robber baron rulebook?) and every death under capitalism is the system's fault.
This is what I consider the most stunning inversion in philosophy I have ever seen. I believe in the basic goodness of human beings, and their ability to individually and rationally choose values that benefit themselves and the framework (the society) that they are symbiotically dependant upon. It is because of this view of humanity that I favour the freedom and individual rights of capitalism. However, capitalism is routinely depicted as a system wholly dedicated to destructive selfishness; to the glory of the strong at the expense of the weak. Those who advocate this system are demonized and caricatured as ignorant, myopic, and evil. The opposing view, generally socialism (communism lite) assumes something else about human beings. It assumes that they cannot be counted upon to do the right thing. It assumes that a government of moral betters is needed to impose law that will elicit the morally approved actions that people are too selfish to be expected to do freely. It insists that force and guilt are the motivators needed to weave the fabric of a proper society. And the champions of socialism declare that IT is the banner under which the good human beings must march. So there it is. The philosophy that insists that freedom and individual rights are viable because we are fundamentally good is lambasted as evil, and the philosophy that insists that force and self-sacrifice are necessary because we are fundamentally evil is championed as good.
What the actual hell?

i used to be a discord group where every mention of communist's failure was met with the overly sarcastic use of a single word: "holodomor"
in the same way someone would just post "Area 51" or "MK Ultra" , implying it's an item of high conspiracy and ridicule, but actually just popinjaying right-wing talking points as though that's the level of criticism sufficient to deal with mentions of a genocide.
the doublethink is unbe-fucking-lievable
And if they aren't brain-damaged enough to do this, they'll just blame "state capitalism", which is the non-falsifiable boogeyman every communist failure has been, is, and will be blamed on for centuries to come.
